Change rebranded Onyx firmware questions

Hello,

I own a Tagus Iris 2017 which is an onyx book, it should be an C67ML Carta with an enhaced battery (3000 mAh) It's resolution is 1024 x 758 with 212 dpi

It comes with a firmware based on 1.7.5 (I suppose), no google play...

So I began to look into flashing the Onyx ROM because of the updates to the reader...

Firstly I backup all my flash: backup, boot, cache, kernel, kpanic, misc, recovery, system, user and userdata with Android Tool.

Looking into the backup dump I can see that it's loader is RK3028ALoader(L)_V2.15_otp.bin, which I got from the net.

Another thing that caught my attention is that in the build.prop it stats:

Quote:

ro.build.product=Tagus_C67MLCarta2
# Do not try to parse ro.build.description or .fingerprint
ro.build.description=Tagus_C67MLCarta2-user 4.2.2 JDQ39 296 release-keys
ro.build.fingerprint=Tagus/Tagus_C67MLCarta2/Tagus_C67MLCarta2:4.2.2/JDQ39/296:user/release-keys

ro.sf.lcd_density=240
The first question is: How can I determine if I hace to flash Carta firmware or Carta2 firmware?

I have downloaded both 1.8.1 flashes and unpacked them, the main difference is the kernel but I can't determine if I must use the Carta2 firmware with a modified build.prop (dpi and so on) or the Carta firmware.

Also I can see that the 1.8.1 firmware brings a new Loader. In case of trouble I can downgrade the Loader to the original one? If no, I have unpacked the firmware so I can flash it with Android Tool without the Loader. The new ROM will work with the original Loader?

Another question is if I flash the parameter file it actually does a repartition? My parameter file is different from the 1.8.1, so I want to know if I can go back to my OEM ROM succesfully

If I flash with Android Tool what I have to do with the partitions which are not in the original firmware? I have to boot into recovery and wipe everything?

Also, I would like to change the system.img (I have modified and repacked succesfully, in theory at last) so I have changed the default, language, timezone, home page and adb enabled by default... Should I flash the original firmware and the the modified system image? Or I can flash it directly modified via Android Tool?

Thank you very much

Boox M96 Universe - where to put update.zip?

I purchased a Boox M96 Universe off Amazon a while back, and wanted to update to their latest firmware 1.81 on the Boox site.

So I followed their instructions, copied update.zip at the root of the device and "Install Firmware from Local Storage" option says it's not present. The device thinks it's a book, and added it to my Library. I also tried putting it in DATA subdirectory, and also tried putting it on the SD card. Nothing works.

Any ideas where I'm supposed to put this update.zip, so the device will upgrade firmware?

thanks!

how to recover a bricked Onyx Boox C67ML

This is a tuto to recover and flash the factory firmware on the Onyx Boox C67ML Carta. This will work on the TAGUS IRIS 2017 as well. It’s a rebranding with the tweaked firmware to connect to their ebook store but hardware is totally the C67ML Carta.
Do this at your own risk. All your data will be lost. This procedure involves prying open the ereader and short circuiting the RAM chip, which is a Sandisk 8 GB. This procedure is a last measure on a desperate attempt to do the device recovery. I did this on my device after failed attempts to have the computer reading or connecting to the device via OTG USB. It’s a fresh install and please be aware that by opening up your device you will lose warranty. In my case I was getting prepared to trash the thing after tinkering with it while trying to get rid of the bookhouse bloatware. So do this if you believe that your device cannot be recovered conventionally with ADB or via the RK flashing tool.
This will wipe clean your device and flash the latest Onyx Boox firmware 1.8.1. It will install Google Play store. Good news there.
I did this using the latest drivers and flashing software provided at Onyx support/firmware site here
http://alturl.com/rw9bg

1. Download and install on your computer the Onyx firmware 1.8.1 + drivers + factory tool from the manufacturer’s support site above.

2. Run factory tool and prep it up: load firmware 1.8.1, next check Recover option, now load provided OEMImage and check the Demo Option.

3. Pry open the C67ML Carta. Careful with the battery cable when you spit the plastic faces. Now connect the device to the USB port of your computer. Nothing will happen. No ports are open at this stage, this means that your device has not reached recovery stage.

4. Locate the Sandisk RAM chip. Can’t miss it. It is imprinted with the Sandisk brand. With a small screwdriver short circuit the left side of the RAM chip connectors until your computer is able to read at least one open port on Factory Tool.

5. When the C67ML port is open to the Factory tool and with 2 re-checked, run the firmware flash procedure until you get a green light. Click Stop and disconnect the USB cable. Your device is rebooting. Time to carefully close the device plastic covers. And that is that. Firmware 1.8.1 will boot up in Chinese but you can easily change it into English or other language in the settings section.

Onyx Boox MAX: stylus recalibration

$

Hello all,

Accidentally I've chosen to do a stylus calibration then pointed and clicked at random places on screen. Result: the stylus is now useless. I cannot point and click on anything on screen. I cannot navigate through the Android GUI with the only four hardware buttons either.

So.. how could I reset the calibration data? How could I start a new stylus calibration process without using the stylus?

Things I tried:

1) www.onyx-boox.com support. Useless. They suggested me to navigate to privacy -> clear data. I cannot do that with a messed up stylus calibration.

2) pressing POWER + Back button and doing a full factory and cache reset. It won't reset stylus calibration.

3) read this thread where an M96 user had exactly my same problem and tried the same things as I did. Booxtor suggest him to download a firmware and use MFG Tool to reset the device and that worked. But I have no full firmware image for my Onyx Boox MAX.

I refuse to believe my 700 USD device has been rendered useless because of a miscalibration.. but well..

Any help will be greately appreciated!

Issue with N96ML digitizer

Hi, I'm having an issue with the digitizer on my N96ML and I wanted to see if it had affected anyone else.

Very often when I start up my reader, I'll find that it is not responsive to the stylus, and what's more, the reader will act as if the stylus is tapping on a point in the lower left corner of the screen. This will usually trigger the "Library" app to open. It's basically making the reader unusable because I can't rely on it to read something when I want to.

I have installed firmware 1.8.1, and it seems like it started after I did this, but not immediately after, so I'm not sure if it's responsible.

Assuming this is a hardware issue, do I have any chance of getting this fixed? I bought it new in the US from a wholesale seller on eBay -- it came with the warranty documentation, but from reading other posts it seems like that might be useless.

Is there anything I can do to resolve this issue?

Update: wiping data/cache didn't do anything

C67ML Carta vs Carta2: which battery last

Hi! I'm looking for a good ereader to replace my old and basic Kindle. I'm looking something affordable, with back light and battery endurance. I got attracted by the C67ML model and discovered the 3 flavors: standard, Carta and Carta2. Now, what about battery performance?.

I can imagine that Carta's versions performs better due the 3000mAh battery pack (according https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/BOOX_C67) but which one would you recommends? I rather prefer better battery performance instead of highest resolution, so If Carta performs better than Carta2, I will choose it. Have anyone compared this two models? Any idea is welcome!

Thanks in advance,

Onyx Boox Max not found in ADB DEVICES

Hi I have tried a whole bunch of solutions online and checked everything.
Including

1.installing ADB driver through Android SDK, which has the following ID on inf file(default)
Driver Management concluded the process to install driver android_winusb.inf_amd64_bd75d06c56998078\android_ winusb.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_18D1&PID_0D02\0123456789ABCDEF with the following status: 0x0.

2.The usb cable works: when I plug in my cell phone, adb devices works well, but just not on my Onyx .
3.The Onyx Boox Max usb developper mode is on
4.Once USB cable is connected, I clicked cancel to the question of if to turn on usb storage.
5.I've also tried uninstalling my cellphone software and drivers on PC, fearing interefence.
6.The onyx boox can also works fine as a storage device when I enable USB storage [of course disabled during 'adb devices' command]
7.Newest onyx boox max firmware released 2017 Jan 8.
8.Windows device manager shows it without a yellow question mark
9.I have unsintalled all junk adb drivers from cellphones etc, and using the most official android SDK one.

Still, adb devices shows nothing [ie., List of devices attached : blank], I can't think of anything to solve the problem

Could anyone tell me how to have make onyx boox max show up on "adb device" command?

I am using win10 x64

A few questions regrading Noox Boox Max

Hello everybody,

As many, I'm thrilled with a real A4 mass production e-book reader, to hit the market (let leave the price aside, for a moment).

As many, I consider myself to be able to purchase it (not easy, but for now – leave that aside), so there are very real questions for me to consider, especially IF eventually I'll become proud owner of Onyx Boox Max. I'm intentionally asking my questions here, in “Onyx forum” (and not in “Which one should I buy” thread), since as many – I'm considered with reader actual performance, hence asking advice, from people actually owning it and therefore, able to share experiences. I'll glad if you may answer the following questions. I'm sure, it will help many others, who're seriously considering that device. Thank you!

1. Is there any manufacturer, rumor, known press release, anything that says – there will be another, real A4 reader on the market?
2. Since it's android device – are you able to read (use) Kindle books (Kindle application) on it?
3. For how long, battery holds, assuming you turned off, everything unnecessary for reading? Does the screen turns off eventually (otherwise, the battery will run out)?
4. Are you able to read colored book on it? Now, I know it's a white and black screen – but, does the resolution and amount of shades of gray enough, or you turn on your tablet every time, you're reading a colored book? Say, a medical anatomy book?
5. Is it reasonable to expect, Boox Max model which will include back-light, or one with buttons placed more reasonable for it designed purpose, reading?

Thank you all in advance. Feel free to share anything, any experience that in your opinion, should or might affect any reasonable person decision to purchase (or not), that reader. Thank you!

Anybody know of any leather sleeve for the Onyx Boox Max?

I like my Max so much I think it deserves a leather sleeve or jacket

Would an iPad sleeve fit the Max?

Is the Max Carta the same dimension as the Max 1?

Onyx Boox current software repository

Hello, I have been looking for developer resources for Boox Max. Can anyone point me to better sources? It seems that the resources were abandoned?? Here's what I have found:

First there is a web http://www.onyx-international.com/en/
It point you to GitHub https://github.com/onyx-intl

I have found many interesting stuff on the github repos but not all regarding Boox Max.
- there is a kernel repo only for BOOX60 and ak98
- the repo booxsdk does not include imx6 https://github.com/onyx-intl/booxsdk, futhermore link mentioned in this repo does not work for me http://opensource.onyx-international.com/

There is many repos for dual core imx6, I have no idea if it is also used on single core cpu in Boox Max or there should be a different repo for it.

Interestingly enough, some repos have been recently updated on a branch 1.8.2 - most likely a new firmware is under development

There is a short helpful wiki https://github.com/onyx-intl/OnyxAndroidSample/wiki

Also this one https://github.com/onyx-intl/public-...for-R65-C65.md probably explained why for many apps downloaded from Google Play I can see the pesky "app is not responding do you want to close it? WAIT, CLOSE"
Quote:

Because we've adjusted standard android power management policy to fit the device, so you need use IDeviceController.newWakeLock() to get corresponding WakeLock to prevent device from sleep.
I would be thankful if the power policy could be chosen from Settings on the device. It is annoying when you use 'foreign' applications.

EDIT:
Any idea where the Android 4.4 sources are?

N96ML questions.

I am new over here with a N96ML tablet, it does fit in with my eDGe which is still used for work.

Now my questions,
1) is there a way to have different types of books (pdf, epub, text) sorted into their own section of the library? So far they are all lumped together even though they are in separate folders on the SD card.

2) is there a way of forcing the format of text books and if it is something like a css file how do you get at it?

3) The manual states that it should be charged from a computer USB port (5v @0.5A), is there any reason why a 5v @2A charger can't be used?

I like the light on the unit, indeed the only grumble I have are the non sorting of book types and text file format strangeness PLUS the fact the stylus is not compatible with my eDGe and Android Note 10.1 (I have been spoiled because the stylus of the eDGe ans Note are interchangeable).

I plan to convert my T68 to the Booxter software, but I want the Lynx T68 Update.zip in case I want to roll back. I tried their website, but it want me to install and possibly pay for pcloud. I tried doing an OTA upgrade to get the file, but it failed, complaining about java script. Does anyone have a Lynx Update.zip?

Is there a way to enable 'usb tethering' on boox max?

Is there a way to enable 'usb tethering' on boox max, so that one can VNC over usb?
vnc client is on max and vnc server is the laptop [windows 10 x64 pro].
This is very helpful in a place without wifi. Would love to suggest to developpers that , this should be a system option in the settings menu in the next firmware.

C67ML Carta 2 - Where to find settings?

I have a C67ML Carta 2 with the latest 1.8.1 firmware.

I have read the manuals, and I have used this site search engine and Google with search terms "C67ML" "Settings" "OReader" "wallpaper" "footnote" "footer" without finding anything useful.

Before I dive into more thorough searches does anyone happen to know:-

[A] Where the various wallpapers are stored, and how I might add to them and select ONE rather than having them cycle through a list.

[B] The footer/footnote bar of the OReader contains the time, the percentage charge, the name of the book, and the current and total page numbers. It does not have the neat bar display of the T68 Lynx, which has a bar showing read pages and chapter breaks in addition to the information above.

Is it possible to edit this bar, and possibly add the T68-type bar display? How?

A free beer* to the person(s) providing the first useful answers.

Best wishes - James

* The free beer must be collected in person in the (English) New Forest.

How do I move notes off of device?

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know if it is possible to copy my notes to the MicroSD card or use the USB cable to a computer?

I cannot find the folder where the notes are stored to make any kind of move to a SD card nor does the Boox Max show up as a device when I connect it to a computer (and yes, I did turn USB debugging on).

Thank you for any help with this!
