BOOX NOVA 1 Update V3.0 confirmed!

Max 3 / Max Lumi: lack of physical buttons annoying?

Hi there.

I am interested to hear from Onyx Boox Max 3 / Max Lumi users if the lack of physical buttons ia a problem for them. I am mainly interested in reading from the couch in both portrait and horizontal mode (facing pages).

It seems to me that when you are not holding a physical button tightly (like you would do with the Max 2) it gets quite wobbly every time you want to turn a page if you have to tap the screen.

Can anyone confirm or dismiss my concerns? Much appreciated. :2thumbsup

Screen inversion / Night mode

Just curious if anyone has managed to get this working on later Onyx devices running Android 9 or 10? I downloaded the hidden settings shortcut from the Play store, and used that to get into the accessibility settings on my Note2. In there is a 'Colour inversion' mode, which on my normal Android tablet will invert the screen when switched (same as night mode on the Kobo/Kindle).

On the Onyx it does make the screen flicker when switched but then reverts to normal. (Strangely after I experimented a colour inversion switch also appeared in the Android swipe down menu briefly.) I also enabled the developer mode and tried using the 'night mode' settings in there as well, to no effect.

Looks like Onyx is making sure that you'll need to buy a version 4 device if you want this feature when they will enable it in the OS.. seems a shame that they have deliberately overridden Android to prevent us using this built in feature.. but if someone out there has cracked it, let us know!

Backup Notes Error

After I upgraded to 3.0 on my NovaPro, I decided to do a full refresh on my tablet to start fresh. I find out now that I'm unable to backup my .zip to the cloud now. Halfway through the upload process it restarts several times only to end up in an error.

However I'm still able to sync my nots and push just fine. To eliminate any poaaibilities, I even unbound my phone and email and restarted with a new email...but still same issue.

Anyone have a solution? I've contacted Onyx but so far it's pretty silent. I'm sure they're busy with updates and all.

Thinking about a Poke 2 or 3

I'm a Kindle Paperwhite user (who doesn't use the Kindle store) who's trying to decide between a Kobo Libra H2O and a Poke 2 or 3. I know the differences in the Poke 2 & 3 and am leaning towards either of those but have a few questions.

1. I'm assuming that it's not waterproof (not a huge deal but would have been nice).
2. Does it have the magnetic cover wake feature? If so, can you turn it off in software? My Paperwhite (now without a cover) will turn on if my glasses case (which has a magnet) touches it the right way which is annoying and unfortunately I can't turn it off in software.
3. Can you sideload your own apk apps? I wouldn't exactly trust their Google Play app or sideload store but could very easily export the apk for the apps that I want off my phone.

Thanks!

Rooting Onyx Boox Note Air

Hi all,

Looks like in the Android 9 devices Onyx Boox have a bug that prevents any user apps from interacting with the Onyx device features via APIs. If you want to control the intensity of the frontlight or the refresh mode, you can only do this from a system app now. This means that the 3rd party ebook reader apps can no longer do this (this is based on the developer of one such app).

Do you know if there is already a confirmed method to root the Android 9-based Boox devices? After we root them, we can add any apps we'd like to the system partition and these features should start working again.

Max 2 battery/boot issue

About a year ago at this point, the battery on my Max 2 ran out while it was in sleep mode. I tried to recharge it but it would not hold a charge and quickly died on me. It now just shows the purple charging light when I try to charge it and nothing happens. If I press and hold the power button the light flickers briefly and then continues to be a solid purple. Is there a way that I can repair my device without having to send it all the way to Hong Kong?

Max Lumi - Is it possible to buy one yet anywhere?

Thanks to this forum I stumbled onto the Onyx range, the Air & Max Lumi, both look super.

Honestly I have not been this excited about e-reader offering since I got my iLiad back in 2006 (RIP).

Yet, it does not appear to be available for purchase or have I missed something?

If it is not for sale any idea on RRP and when it might be released?

The website is somewhat unclear on points.

With the Boox readers, I can link to Dropbox. In what form are which documents synchronized or saved?

Looks like the latest models and maybe also older models use a Linux, with changed kernel, which is not public.
I read that other products from China send data to specific ips.
How to prevent that, would rooting that device helpful to solve this issue?

Just how much current dare you charge your Onyx with?

With my Note 2, if I put my super Xiaomi charger on it, it can suck up about 2.6 amps (@5v) and speed charge at 120% an hour. However, that is faster than my phone which was designed to be paired with that charger. I swapped the high speed charger for a low speed one to cut the current to 1 amp, it's not like it needs charging quickly anyway. I just don't trust Onyx power electronics...

Does anyone know what the ratings are for these devices? As I've had an original Note lose its capability to charge after a couple of months, I treated the Note Plus replacement very carefully and it seems to have retained most of its capability after a couple of years. With the Note2/3/Air and other later devices I guess they are speed charge capable, I just can't seem to find the specs. The Note Air especially should be capable of really quick charging with its twin batteries, it would be really interesting to see whether that is indeed engineered properly.

( If you don't have a proper USB tester to measure the current, you can use Accubattery app, which is sometimes wildly misleading but doesn't seem too bad on giving current during charging. A USB tester is very handy to discover that you're about to blow up your device, and/or the difference between different devices and cables in your cupboard - they vary a great deal more than you might expect!)

Recommend a keyboard? (Nova Pro)

Anyone have a keyboard recommendation for Onyx Boox devices, especially the Nova Pro?

I have tried a couple of ZaggKeys models and had severe problems with keystrokes missing or repeating (e.g. "msssingg oor epeaating") on the Nova Pro and other Android devices even though it works fine with my laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad running Linux).

What bluetooth keyboards have you used that work well on your Boox?

(Or, come to think of it, has anyone checked whether you can plug a USB keyboard in with a USB-C adapter?)

Thanks!

Change to M92 default settings. PDF reader customization. Is it possible?

Hello! For some reason, the thread of M92 is closed, so I'm gonna ask here. I still actively use M92 and want to change default settings of PDF reader.
I like to read in full screen and scroll pages modes. By default, these are turned off, so every time I open another document, I am forced to manually switch them on. Is there a possibility to either install more customizable third-party reader or to make some changes in the settings to make these modes switched on by default? I wonder if somewhere in memory maybe exists an editable config file for it.
I remind you that this is a Linux, not an Android model. Thanks in advance!

Moon+ reader on boox nova 3

My understanding is that u can put the Google play store on the boox nova 3 eink reader. Has anyone used moon+ reader on it? If so how does it run? All the features working?
Moon+ seems to be the only reader I've found that has a library view which puts part of the book description right there without having to go clicking each book, which I find totally logical but I guess reader designers don't 😠 which is why I want to keep using that app.

First impression of Note3 and some questions

Well, I just received the Note3 yesterday and I played a little with it.
It is a big jump from my older M96. A lot of things missing in M96 are now in Note3. The first impression is real real good. Wow.
I have some questions about some things I missed, maybe you may have already talked about in the past:

a) I did not found a way to export notes in a png or pdf format. How can I export notes?
b) I only read ePubs, not pdf. The the ability to annotate ePubs with free-stroke is really great, but I have some fears: how can I export this kind of notes/scribbles? Changing margins, or font size "destroy" the notes, reducing them to a little icon. This is ok for writing, but not for underlined or circled words. And, BYW, how can I delete a "little icon" with a note inside?
c) Why there is only chinese and english dictionary for voice-to-text translation?
d) I want to make some keyboard experiment writing: what app/word processor is the better for fast typing?

Thank you

Fabrizio

The dictionary on Onyx Boox

$

I'm looking to upgrade my Kindle Paperwhite to a bigger screen and a faster and more open system with better organization of books. What I mainly use it for is reading books in several different languages (English, Russian, Ukrainian and Spanish, mostly). The dictionary is my most used feature, apart from the actual reading itself.

I have found this guide for adding stardict files to be used as dictionaries, and it seems that most of my languages are represented: https://www.reddit.com/r/Onyx_Boox/c...x_boox_nova_2/

My questions is how does this dictionary look in action? If anyone could provide a screenshot of the dictionary, I'd be very greatful! Preferably the Oxford English Dictionary, if you have that installed. If there's anyone with the Ushakova Ru-Ru dictionary installed (or whatever else foreign language one) it would be really helpful if you could provide a screenshot, as well!

I'm now mainly looking at the Nova 3, if that makes a difference.

Also, do the dictionaries work with conjugated verbs or inflected forms? What I mean by this is would "working" or "worked" give you the definition for "(to) work"? Does this work for other languages, as well? If it doesn't work that would render them next to useless for me, I'm afraid.

I have found this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=218922. But it's a bit unclear whether it actually works in practice or not.

If it doesn't work in the native app, would some other app such as Koreader or Moon reader have a better dictionary implementation that supports this?

I read that the Note Air now has a gyroscope.

Does the Max Lumi have a gyroscope as well?
