Max 3 dictionaries and Google translate

$

Hello,

I like how the translation works on Max 3, but I miss some languages. What I would like is:
- to add Slovak - English/French/Luxembourgish dictionaries for one word translation,
- to add Slovak language into existing Google translate.

I need to use both with pdf documents in the library.
Any solution?
Thanks a lot

Onyx Boox Max 3 screen replacement

$

Hello there,

Unfortunately my Onyx Boox Max 3's screen has developed horizontal and vertical black/white lines, so it looks like the screen needs replacing. It started off as one horizontal line but more keep appearing. I have no idea why this has happened. A factory reset hasn't resolved it so I'm assuming it's a hardware issue.

I purchased it from a second hand high street retailer in the UK, although it was pretty much unused.

Does anyone here know if I can still get the screen replaced by Onyx even if I haven't purchased it new from a store they recognise? As far as I'm aware they replace the screen under the usual 12 month warranty? And the device hasn't even been out for 12 months in the UK as far as I'm aware...

I'm just wondering in case I run into issues with returning it to the high street retailer. It would be pretty annoying if they accuse me of dropping it and causing the damage myself. They are some scuff marks on the machine (I accidenty scraped it against a wall :( ) so I'm hoping they don't use that against me. Plus I'd actually like to keep it as it's such a useful tablet, so I'm in two minds whether it would be better to contact Onyx direct and see if they can replace the screen for me. Both options are going to take time with the ongoing pandemic with shipping etc, so I'd rather just choose one at this point.

If anyone could enlighten me with their experiences with Onyx that would be fabulous :) and if anyone has been in a similar position I'd love to hear from you.

Many thanks

Onyx Boox Note 2.0.1 Prerooted System Image

This is from a newly updated and factory reset Note, so should have no traces of Kingroot at all.
Rooted with SuperSU.
Let me know if I should upload any of the other partitions (except userdata).

Do with it what you will.
I am not/will not be responsible for anything, including saying what to do with it.
Yes, I flashed this on my Note, works fine.
If you fuck up the tablet, don't ruin it for the rest of us by pretending it wasn't your own fault and try to have Onyx repair it at their cost.

No, I won't make a prerooted system image for other firmware versions, I need my tablet for reading and it takes time to extract the images, root it, test it, then flash back to 2.0.1 (I don't want to upgrade to newer firmware versions).

I would use Magisk systemless, but I'm not sure how Onyx packed their boot.img, since as soon as I unpack and repack the stock one without modification, it fails to boot (bootloader unlocked).
Code:

[god@test-server ~]$ fastboot getvar unlocked
unlocked: yes
Finished. Total time: 0.000s
[god@test-server ~]$ fastboot getvar secure
secure: no
Finished. Total time: 0.000s

2.0.1:
system.img
boot.img

Do not mirror and/or claim as your own (people have done this, unfortunately).

Removing Factory Pre-installed Fonts?

$

Hi all fellow Boox users,

Just started to use my Max 3 and found that there are 40 pages of factory pre-installed fonts in the default reader, 99% of them are Noto family.

Would love to remove them and keeping those I would really use only. Any advice?

Have rooted the device and tried to locate those fonts in the root without success -_-.

Thanks really lots.

Poke2 or Poke Pro?

Just found out android tablets with e-ink displays are a thing! These may be the answer to my very specific needs (Moon+, Pocket, and some ability to email to me@onenote.com).

It looks like Boox is the brand to go with (vs Likebook or hacking a Nook), so I'm trying to decide between the Poke 2 or Poke Pro. But I have some concerns:

- For the former, I like that it's Android 9 because it'll be relevant for a few more years than the Poke Pro, unless PP gets upgraded to 9. Any word on that?

- The battery seems smaller, but 9 brought in energy efficiency improvements. Not sure if they'll balance out. Thoughts?

- I'm wary of getting a just-released device with no reviews yet. Anyone got their hands on a Poke2 to give info?

- The price difference is ~$50 CAD. I'm not too bothered about paying if it'll do what I need it to, but I'm wondering if it's worth it to get the Poke2 over Poke Pro eg a significant step up. Your take?

- Is goodereader.com a good/reputable seller? One of the videos said they were an official North American distributor, but I didn't find that noted on their or Boox site. Trying to decide whether to order from them (if it ships from States) or from the official Boox store (which includes a case, but will be shipping from China).

Thanks!

How to Turn Boox Max 2 into Multi-Screen Monitors?

$

Hello,

A few weeks ago our company bought 8 pieces of ONYX BOOX MAX 2.
Our goal is to create a multi screen display - we want to connect all the readers to a video camera, use their monitor mode, and play live video with each reader using 1/8 of the video.
We made a sketch that explains it well:

Video Camera > Splitter > Onyx Boox Max 2 on monitor mode.
We don't want to just play movies or something like that, otherwise we would use standard computer screens. We have a specific need that your monitors answer so we don't want to replace them.
The problem is we tried some things that work with regular monitors but it didn't work with your readers and we are looking for your help.

What we tried to do so far:
We bought two different HDMI splitters -

We connected the reader's HDMI cables to the splitter, but the readers don't receive the video. It says there is a problem, like it's not connected to anything.
Standard computer monitor doesn't have any problem with these splitters, everything is working fine, but we want it to be your Eink readers and not a regular monitor.
We also tried with Raspberry Pi, and the same problem - it has a problem monitoring the video.
The only thing that worked was to connect two readers to a computer that has two HDMI ports, the problem is that there are no computers with 8 ports, no graphic card with 8 ports.

What do you recommend to do?
What device do we need to buy or what do we need to do to successfully split the video well into 8 Onyx Boox Max 2 reades?
What is the difference between a graphic card that has some ports (works for us) and the splitter that has some ports (not working)

Thanks in advance!

Seeking feedback on Boox Assistant app, other article readers

I just learned of Boox Assistant https://boox.com/boox-assistant/ and hope to hear from folks who can compare it to Pocket (or similar apps) for sending articles from a web page on your computer to an ereader.

I've used Pocket on my Nova 2 and it's OK, but the page turn doesn't work properly (it advances slightly more than one page, making it more cumbersome than scrolling). Also, neither of the two included fonts are satisfactory.

On my older Kobo, Pocket works seamlessly and has precise page turns like an epub. I would pay for an app that worked as well for saving/reading articles on Android. Thanks for any observations or suggestions on other apps.

Onyx annotations in google drive

Hi guys!

I noticed that when pushing my files to google drive my annotations (highlights and drawings) are pushed as well and visible in google drive! This is amazing!

Now I am trying to manage these annotations. I will be most grateful for any suggestions concerning below:

1. Is there a way to export all highlights (across all documents) on Onyx e-reader to a single file.

2. Is it possible to search across comments/highlights in google drive?

3.Is it possible to expost all comments in google drive to a single file?

Many Thanks!

Scribble and Highlighting in PDF

I used the scribble function and highlighting in a PDF. This creates a huge number of annotations in the PDF because each gesture is associated with an annotation. I have a small javascript that runs with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC to merge all Ink gestures on each page into a single annotation. This is a bit of a hack, but it makes it easier to review the comments in a document when mixing gestures and highlighting or non-scribble mode annotations. I mention it here in case others run into the problem. Perhaps Onyx could mege gestures that are within a certain distance, so we get one annotation per area of writing/drawing in scribble model. I'm using the Note 2.

Boox Note (Pro) Book Date Import Error

$

Hello Fellow Boox Users,

When importing books from Calibre (Ver. 4.14) to the Note Pro (Ver. 2.2.2 firmware), all books show '31 Dec 1969' as the import date. This is typically a Unix era error that can be fixed by setting the correct device time. It doesn't seem to work in this case and makes a Neo 3.0 library sort on 'added time' impossible since all books have the same added date.

Is anyone else experiencing this error? Any suggested fixes?

Regards,

Export PDF-annotations from Max2

$

I've searched this forum and the web, (and tried on my Max2) but not found a solution for this use case where I need to study a lot of PDF-material for university entrance exams:

1. I have a few PDF-files on my Max2, in total several hundreds of pages, mainly text.
2. I want to highlight selected keywords.
3. I want to export ONLY the highlighted words to a separate file, purpose to import them to another application on a PC, e.g. a mindmap software so I could summarize my learnings and findings there.
(4). Scribbling and also exporting scribbles to some picture files might be considered nice to have, but not really necessary.

Now I've found out how to highlight and how to export a PDF, but not how to export the highlights ONLY to e.g. a text file. Looking at the search results e.g. from this forum, it seems it was earlier possible but might have changed in a upgrade.

Please enlighten me!

Screen streaming over HTTP

$

Hello, I just purchased the Note 2 and I'm very happy with it!
Among other uses, I would like to use it during lessons as a graphics tablet and for this I would need to share the Note2 screen with a PC in real time while using the "Notes" app on the Note2, to show to students on a video projector the things I write.

Being the Note2 an Android, I tried many applications and looked for various solutions but none worked until I found a small free app that "almost" does what I was looking for.
The app is called "Screen Stream over HTTP" and very simply allows to replicate the Note2 screen on a web page of a computer (running in the same local network). It works well except when the "Note" app is opened in Note2, which is the one I need to use...

When "Note" is used on the Note2, happens that:
- It's possible to draw only on a portion of the screen in Note2.
- The drawing on the web page is rotated and (when the streaming app is running) also the drawing on the Note2 screen is rotated when its screen is refreshed (see image)

The same thing happens with some other similar applications (probably they are all based on the same public domain code) and also with the famous AirDroid app, in mirroring screen mode.

So the Note2, when the "Note" app is used, becomes somehow incompatible with these streaming applications, probably the internal screen resolution and orientation change or something like that, but in my opinion it could be easy to adapt these apps or develop an official Boox app to get HTTP streaming working properly.

What do you think Boox?

Onyx nova 2 and chrome

$

Hello, I discovered J-novel club last month and it was a bit like being at Christmas in advance.
In France the light novel is not as extensive as here and the licenses are much, but then much less numerous.
Not yet sufficiently proficient in English to be able to really enjoy reading a complete book in this language, I translate the premium epub into French and convert it to put it on my kindle.
But for catching up and prepub, I read on my android tablet (10 ") via chrome (instant translation) but, reading many hours like that quickly tires the eyes.

Hence the idea of buying an onyx nova 2 reader on android (probably 7.8 ") in order to combine the comfort of an e-ink screen with the simultaneous translation of the google chrome / translate combo. I know that it works on my huawei tablet but, i was wondering if it works on an onyx?

I think I take it on e-reader.store/en and therefore normally have no additional costs on it (VAT and customs fees)?

In advance thank you for your response and suggestion :Merci:

This may be the best 6" reader I've ever used. It's definitely the lightest and the thinnest yet it doesn't flex. Seems to be really well built. The screen lighting is among the best. We all are already familiar with Onyx software so no surprises there.
For reference, I have a Kobo Clara HD, Kobo Glo HD, Kindle Voyage, Kindle K3, Boox Poke (not pro) and a couple of inkbooks and I've had a Boyue, and a paperwhite in the 6" size.
Things I really like about the new Poke; the power button has a positive click feel, not a mushy push and it's located on top! That's a plus in my book. :) The back cover is a soft-ish plastic that's fairly grippy, at least it's not too slippery anyway. The already mentioned lightness and thinness and of course, being Android you can install other reader apps.
Anything I don't like? Well, the included case/cover, which is also incredibly light, is the stick-on style so it's not a simple act to install and remove anytime you want.
So far, I really like it and am glad I got it. :D

Note 2: NeoReader 3.0 horizontal orientation floating dock bug

$

Hi all,

I'm trying to read a PDF of a powerpoint presentation with my Note 2 using NeoReader app. Firmware is build 2020-04-09_19-48_3.3_7c5d74f.

The floating dock sits in almost in the middle of the page and, clearly, makes using not possible.

Has anyone encountered this problem and fixed it?

I tried rebooting my device but no luck.

Thanks!
